Notes for a care conversation

Medicine and rule information was checked September 26, 2026.

The medicine matters more than the menu

Ask which medicine is being offered, what it would treat and why this version was chosen. Peptides are small chains, like beads on a string, made from the tiny pieces also found in proteins.

Ask what the exact medicine is approved to treat

Ask for the medicine’s name, whether it is a shot or tablet, and why it is being offered. The broad phrase “peptide therapy” leaves those questions unanswered.

FDA is the US agency for medicine review (Food and Drug Administration).

Tirzepatide sold as Zepbound and semaglutide sold as Wegovy have FDA approval for weight management. Their approval details were checked September 26, 2026.

  • Which health problem is this meant to treat?
  • Which product and form are proposed?
  • Does the evidence cover that product and that use?

Compounding leaves another question to answer

A drug company supplies a finished product; compounding involves making or mixing the medicine itself. Pharmacists, doctors and businesses registered with FDA can make these preparations.

For compounded medicines, there is no FDA approval or pre-sale FDA check of quality, safety or treatment results. This was checked September 26, 2026.

  • Which unmet need makes an approved medicine unsuitable for me?
  • Which pharmacy will make this preparation?
  • Which rule allows this pharmacy to prepare my medicine?

A prescription medicine requires an order from someone licensed to prescribe it under the federal rule checked September 26, 2026.

A past shortage is not an open-ended answer

The September 26, 2026 check of FDA’s shortage list found neither tirzepatide nor semaglutide listed as being in short supply.

Here, making a copy means making a version very similar to a ready-made medicine from a drug company.

Routine preparation by a pharmacy or doctor of near-copies of drug companies’ existing medicines is generally barred under federal rules.

An exception applies when your prescriber decides a change in the made-to-order version makes a significant difference for you compared with the ready-made medicine.

  • Ask for the reason specific to you, rather than a stock explanation.
  • Ask how the proposed change meets the relevant rule.

A research label is a reason to stop and ask

FDA warns against buying weight-loss products labelled for research but sold directly to people for use as medicine. These products may harm you, and their quality has not been established. This warning was checked September 26, 2026.

  • Ask whether the item is a finished medicine or a research product.
  • Ask who will write the prescription and which pharmacy will supply the medicine.
